5 tips for avoiding sugar during holiday gatherings

Enjoy the holidays without the sugar rush.

During the holiday season, we're often overwhelmed with sweet temptations. Here are some strategies to help you enjoy the most wonderful time of the year without overindulging in sugar:

1

Stick to a healthy eating schedule: Have three moderate meals and small snacks throughout the day to prevent blood sugar dips and spikes. This helps maintain energy levels and reduces the temptation to overeat sugary treats. When possible, plan your meals ahead so you don't make poor choices when you're overly hungry.

2

Whole food snacking: Have healthy snack options on hand, such as apples with nut butter, hard boiled eggs, Greek yogurt with berries or veggies with hummus, to satisfy your hunger right when it hits.

3

Be smart at buffets: Bring a healthy dish to potluck meals, eat slowly and focus on conversations instead of food to avoid overeating. Walk away from the buffet once you've eaten a moderate-sized plate.

4

Limit or avoid alcohol consumption: Alcohol can affect blood sugar, negatively interact with many medications and affect your sleep. Instead of a cocktail, consider having a “mocktail” with sparkling water and fresh fruit.

5

Take care of your whole self: Make daily physical activity a priority. If the holidays are busy, use your free time to go on a family hike, do yoga or a quick online workout class.
